Aunque no hay fecha definitiva, varias fuentes confirman que Sony está preparando la edición en Blu-ray de The Bridge on the River Kwai y parece muy probable que tanto en USA como en nuestro país esté disponible antes de finalizar el año.

Next, here's some AWESOME news: Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders on a Blu-ray version of Sir David Lean's Bridge on the Kwai from Sony (SRP $34.95, but Amazon has it for just $24.49). There's no street date listed yet, but we'll post more details as they come in. [Editor's Note: I HAVE just confirmed with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that Bridge on the River Kwai IS coming to Blu-ray Disc this year. Watch for an official announcement in the coming weeks.]

Recordemos que Sony anunció este título en los albores del formato y -afortunadamente bajo mi punto de vista- lo retiró indefinidamente de la lista de lanzamientos. Esperemos que la demora haya valido la pena

Han aparecido los primeros detalles extraoficiales. Saldrá el 2 de noviembre en USA con los siguientes extras:

• Picture-in-graphics track: Crossing the Bridge:
• Replicas of the original lobby cards
• William Holden and Alec Guinness on The Steve Allen Show
• Newly-discovered archival audio of William Holden narrating The Bridge on the River Kwai premiere
• 35 page book with stories and photos from the production

Un artículo sobre la restauración efectuada:

Finally today, you may recall that we first posted word a few weeks ago that Sony was readying a new HD master of Sir David Lean's Bridge on the River Kwai, and would be releasing the film on Blu-ray Disc before the end of the year. Well, Bits reader Rezaul L. sent over a link this morning to a recent article over on the El Paso Times about the restoration. The restored film was recently screened at the Plaza Classic Film Festival there, and Sony's in-house restoration guru, Grover Crisp, talked about the 4K restoration effort and process. Crisp is as good as they come at this stuff, so it's well worth a read. Thanks to Rezaul for the link!

Las pelis clásicas que ha ido editando Sony en BD han estado muy bien tratadas y no creo que sea una sorpresa que Kwai salga con la alfombra roja.

• a photo gallery

Y tal como se intuía en la artwork del packaging, se confirma que la edición será un combo de 2 Blu-ray Disc + DVD.

Ya se conocen los idiomas de la edición alemana (en el mismo enlace) y ... nada de castellano. La carátula es distinta, por cierto, aunque tampoco menciona a Lean.

Afortunadamente, y a diferencia de lo ocurrido en los lanzamientos de estos últimos meses por parte de Sony, la edición USA llevará subtítulos en español, tanto para la película como para el resto de contenidos:
